With this European metaverse project, the presidential candidate seems to want to defend the sovereignty of the old continent. In his speech, Emmanuel Macron points the finger the American and Chinese digital giants who are already trying to appropriate the metaverse.

As the politician points out in his speech, Chinese companies are already exploring the development of solutions for digital spaces. This is the case of ByteDanceparent company of the social network TikTokfrom Baidufrom Tencent and D’Ali Baba.

The candidate wants to support the creation of the underlying technologies of the metaverse
During the conference, Emmanuel Macron remained vague about the measures that will be taken to support the development of a European metaverse. Asked by our colleagues from BFM, Cédric O, Secretary of State for Digitalclarified the project of the candidate LREM.
According to him, the president does not want to create a public metaverse for Europeans. Emmanuel Macron’s program instead provides for: support the development of the underlying technologies digital worlds.
The State Secretary for Digital ensures that the idea is create alternative graphics engines on European territory. Cédric O takes graphics engines such as Unreal Engine and Unity as an example. These two engines make it possible to design immersive virtual universes.
This isn’t the first time the metaverse has appeared as part of the presidential campaign. In February, Valerie Pecresse had already slid the term metaverse in a speech. Candidate LR had called the subject negative.

Emmanuel Macron’s statement comes weeks after Chinese authorities announced their intention to regulate the metaverse. Beijing is aware of the interest of Chinese brands in virtual universes and has announced the establishment of a strict regulatory framework. At the same time, the Chinese government will design: its own metaversethe “Yuan Universe”.
