The National Rugby League (LNR) dives into Web3 by announcing a partnership with two NFT projects. While one will offer the best moments of the Top 14 and Pro D2 in the form of non-replaceable tokens, the second will see the creation of a fantasy rugby blockchain game like Sorare.
NFTs come to the world of rugby
Earlier this year, the National Rugby League (LNR) launched a tender for: go to Web3 and non-fungible tokens (NFT). Two projects have been selected to realize this transition: LegendaryPlays and OVAL3.
The first player will enable the creation of an NFT platform, where the best moments from Top 14 and Pro D2 matches, such as NBA Top Shot for basketball. The second project, powered by Bamg Sport, will be the arrival of a fantasy rugby game. The performance of players in real life determines the score of the users, like Sorare does for football and baseball.
Emmanuel Eschalier, managing director of the NRL, expressed his enthusiasm for this Web3 shift:
“We believe in the appeal of NFTs to engage and expand the community of fans of our championships in France and beyond. We enter the digital world of NFTs with an offer that reflects our sport and its values: an impeccable collective with the 30 professional clubs involved, solidarity in the redistribution of income and an enhanced fan experience, with two expert actors, Bamg Sports and LegendaryPlays. »

A complete game of fantasy rugby?
To create OVAL3, Bamg Sports used its experience with its Fantasy Rugby World game, which has 35,000 users, to develop an experience adapted to the codes of blockchain gaming and Web3.
For this, the company has partnered with Pyratz Labs, a Web3 incubator specializing in the Tezos (XTZ) blockchain, which has notably supported the Dogami project. We also find the communication agency Markchain, the consultancy firm ERA2140, as well as the law firm ORWL.
But especially the project offered the services of Antoine Dupontthe international scrum half, crowned the best player in the world, who will play the role of ambassador for OVAL3.
In addition to the Top 14 and the Pro D2, OVAL3 plans to expand to other leagues in the futureas confirmed by Tony Bouquier to Cryptoast, the CEO of the project and of Bamg Sports:
“The French Championships are a reference in the world of rugby, but it is clear that our aim is to take advantage of the opportunity presented by the OVAL3 offer for players, clubs and leagues, for all European competitions, the Southern Hemisphere and emerging markets (US, Japan, etc.), not to mention the women’s leagues as soon as possible.”
According to the project roadmap, the NFT game should be available from the end of 2022/beginning of 2023.
While the Rugby World Cup will take place in France next year, the NRL could not have picked a better time to take an interest in Web3 and NFT technologies. With these initiatives, the sport could once again serve as a gateway to attract more people to the blockchain ecosystem.
